Q. I am 33 years old and suffering from throat pain, especially while yawning or while swallowing saliva. This is a kind of recurring problem; sometimes, there is no pain for few days / weeks. I have already consulted couple of ENT Surgeons; and it was diagnosed as an acidity problem. Accordingly, I have been prescribed antacids, which gave some relief. The pain generally aggravates, especially when more spicy food is taken. What could be the actual problem? Is there any permanent cure for this?

A. This may be a manifestation of reflux of acid from the stomach into the gullet (called gastroesophageal reflux disease in medical terminology). I would advise a four week trial of a more potent acid suppressant than antacids and would recommend Pantoprazole 40 mg once a day. Please maintain a diary of how significant your symptoms of painful swallowing are over this period and let me know. Try to avoid spicy food, too much of tea and coffee and cigarette smoking during this period. This should also help.
