Typical symptoms of hangover include nausea, ringing of the ears, headaches, increased heart rate, excessive thirst, anxiety, insomnia, unsteadiness, dizziness (bed spins), diaphoresis (sweating) and shakiness. How does one avoid hangover? Always eat something before drinking. Drink Slowly. Sip drinks rather than gulp them. Space your drinks. While drinking, substitute soda or fruit juice for alcohol from time to time. Know and respect your personal drinking limit. Drink plenty of water. This is to replace the water loss due to dehydration. Don’t sleep immediately How to hang the hangover? Drink fresh juices. They flush the system of toxins and rehydrate your body. Take multivitamins. A multivitamin capsule replaces the nutrients that are destroyed during heavy drinking. Take aspirin if you have a severe headache. A tablespoon or two of honey can do wonders. If everything else fails, rest. Lie down in a dark room. If your schedule allows you to stay there all day, you could be in a good shape by the evening. Last but not the least, the only sure-fire way to spell relief the morning after the night before is MODERATION. What is a Standard drink? A Standard drink is equal to 14 g alcohol. It is also equivalent to 1 can of beer with 4% alcohol (about 330 ml) or 1 glass of wine with 12% alcohol (about 140 ml) or 1 shot of whisky with 42.8% alcohol (about 35 ml). What is the right way to make a toast? Before making or raising a toast, know exactly are you going to say. See that everyone has a filled glass. Stand and face whom you are toasting to. Raise your glass up. Say your toast and look at the recipient(s). Wave your glass to all and tinkle the recipient's if close enough. Take a sip, subtly raise your galss and then sit down. What is the standard way to serve a cocktail? Ideally, most of the cocktails should be served chilled. Therefore, always place the glasses in the freezer. Take enough crushed ice for your needs. Take out the glass from the freezer and fill with crushed ice, or ice water. Prepare the cocktail you want to serve. Holding the glass on to its stem, shake it in a downward stroke to remove the ice. Strain cocktail into the glass. Garnish and enjoy. How do I flame my drink? Warm your glass much before you begin. Prepare the cocktail. Pour a bit of your highest proof alcohol into a spoon. Ignite using a long kitchen match. Carefully pour flaming liquid into cocktail. Serve immediately. Extinguish before drinking. Use extreme caution. For a fabulous sparkle effect, carefully twist an orange rind over the flame. Never drink while flame is still lit. What is the correct method to layer a cocktail glass? Select a shot or cordial glass. Refer to the density chart for approximate weight of liqueurs. Pour the heaviest liquid first. Place a bar or teaspoon upside down into the glass against the edge. Slowly pour the next heaviest liqueur over the back of the spoon. Continue with each liqueur, ending with the lightest. The trick is to pour very slowly. If using a bar spoon, pour down the twisted part of the handle. How to be the best host? Have a responsible person who does not drink take care of the bartending. Do not leave it to a paid server alone. If you do have a professional bartender, make sure he is trained in how to be a responsible one. Use peg measures for pouring drinks. Make sure people who are being served are not already intoxicated. Serve healthy snacks that contain carbohydrates so that people don't drink on an empty stomach. Serve dinner early so that people can eat and then drink for as long as they like. Make sure there are plenty of options available for non-drinkers. Most people overlook teetotaler guests. Do not let inebriated friends leave your party on the driving seat. Get them a taxi instead or get them to stay the night. Don't let them drive. When someone declines a drink, respect his choice and don't pressurise. People should have an option of not drinking if they don't want to. Such minor measures and you can avoid any mishap … Why shouldn’t one mix driving with drinking? Drinking alcohol affects the body in the following ways: You cannot coordinate and control your muscles the way you normally can. It takes longer to react, so it is more difficult to deal with something happening on the road that you didn't expect. You are less able to judge speed and distance. They often feel more daring and reckless, making them more likely to drive much faster. Isn’t it obvious as to why one shouldn’t mix the two? ![]() Last edited by Bunny; 15th October 2007 at 05:11 AM. |
